English and Social Sciences

I joined Fulford’s faculty in 2023 after teaching for a decade as a tenured professor at a college in the United States. Although I’ve taught college- and university-level courses in Newfoundland and Iowa, I now call Ontario home, and I love teaching high school English, Social Sciences, Humanities, Geography, and History at Fulford! As a teacher, I am committed to experiential, hands-on, multicultural learning and teaching students the concrete thinking, writing, and researching skills they need to thrive at college and university, a world I know well.

I hold my students to high academic standards but also support them in their efforts to achieve those standards and prepare for life after graduation. Our world, after all, is changing at a rapid pace. I work to consistently adapt my classes to create opportunities for students to engage in real-world problems, challenging them to confront change with intelligence and creativity, and to develop the self-confidence and skills needed in the evolving world of work.

In addition to teaching at Fulford, I help out on my family’s farm, where we raise cows, chickens, and pigs. I also write books, a passion I bring into my Grade 12 university prep English class. As a professional author, I’ve published essays in several places, in both Canada and the U.S.; My story collection, this Ramshackle Tabernacle (2010) was shortlisted for the BMO Winterset Award; my novel A Blessed Snarl (2012) was nominated for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and in 2019, I won ScreenCraft’s Hollywood-based Short Story Award.

When I’m not playing with my four young kids or preparing for class, I am at work on a third novel!
