Residential Life

Our Residential Life program is exactly the same as that of the traditional boarding schools, with a focus on immersing the students in North American culture and the rules and regulations of a boarding school. Our environment ensures students learn about traditional boarding school expectations, including appropriate social behaviour like how to handle roommate issues, doing laundry, becoming more independent as well as why and how to join sport teams and clubs. Fulford students also have a chance to volunteer, both around the Fulford campus and in the local Brockville community. Learning how to be an active participant in school activities and volunteering in the local community are an essential part of integrating into a boarding school environment. Our Residential Life experience helps students to clearly recognize both what’s expected of them at boarding schools, and how they can get the most out of their experiences.

Perhaps the most important thing that students will learn at Fulford Academy is how to become intercultural. Often, students tend to gravitate towards others from their home countries because they lack the experience or confidence to communicate effectively with students from other countries. The Fulford experience helps students develop the skills they need to feel comfortable conversing and interacting in English, ensuring they can quickly integrate into their new boarding school environment with confidence when September arrives.

Life at Fulford

Fulford Academy is like one big family. Students feel at home living on the campus. The enrollment is small and the facilities are designed to maintain a friendly atmosphere. Designated Faculty members are on the premises 24 hours a day and act as surrogate parents to our students. It is this type of supportive environment that creates a feeling of acceptance and self-reliance in our students.

The English Only Rule

At Fulford Academy, all students are paired with a roommate of a different nationality. This ensures that their conversation is limited to the English language only. The English Only Rule is one which we take very seriously. Students should expect to hear this rule echoed time and time again. The rule applies within the classroom, on the sports fields and throughout the Community.

The concept of "the English Only Rule" is crucial as it helps students to understand the importance of total immersion in the English language. Adherence to the English Only Rule directly impacts upon a student's ultimate success and failure in the Canadian Boarding School System and Culture.
